Seeing Brian playing happily with his new brothers and sisters and looking so relaxed in a family home, it is hard to realise the painful path his young life has taken. It was hunger that first brought Brian into contact with Retrak in Kampala in 2005; he could hardly talk, and was very frightened of adults. His behaviour was sometimes bizarre; walking around naked or crawling on the ground like a baby. Gradually the staff befriended him and his behaviour began to change although he still showed a lot of fear, anxiety and suspicion. Over time the staff learnt that he was an only child raised by a single mother. She struggled in life, and would take her anger and frustration out on Brian; further investigation revealed that she had been involved in witchcraft and prostitution.
Brian was taken to the Tudabujja Halfway Home to help with further rehabilitation and care. Despite his past Brian was keen to go back home to his mother and was very happy when he resettled with her in 2006. He went back to school and his performance was very encouraging and his mother was helped to start a small tailoring business. Unfortunately this was short-lived and conditions at home badly deteriorated. He had had thoughts that he wanted to live with the father he had never met, but subsequently discovered that he had died. Once again, the turmoil of his family life caused Brian to run back to the streets.
Eventually he returned to Retrak and was once again welcomed and helped. However, during their efforts to trace Brian’s mother Retrak staff learnt that she too had died. He had always hoped to see his mother again despite being mistreated by her, but now he never would. Brian was alone without any known relatives. He was full of grief and it was impossible to console him.
Brian’s life has since entered a new, happier chapter as Retrak indentified a foster family for him. He has adjusted well to his new life and his new family has accepted Brian as one of their own. They are all involved in his progress, including his new brothers and sisters, who help him with his school work. Brian is now in the best place to grow and mature into a healthy and happy individual.
