RETRAK Team Runs the Brussels 20k
A team of nine intrepid runners ran the Brussels 20k race for RETRAK on Sunday May 27th 2007. Adrian Smith, Dave Mann, Giles Dickson, Jane Bindloss-Gibb, Kerstin Duhme, Lesley Young, Mike Monfort, Paul Moynan and Roger Leigh joined 28,000 other runners on the course through the centre of Brussels. Conditions were dry but warmer than expected. When the sun poked through the clouds it became very warm. The early stages of the course took the runners through three underpasses, the first of which was quite long, and thousands of people running through the tunnel extracted most of the oxygen out of the air so muscles began to tire. It was a relief to come back up into fresh air! At times the course was quite narrow, so finding clear road and keeping a rhythm was difficult. The final 4km to the finish was a long steady climb where many slowed and began walking which made it even more difficult for those who were running behind them.
Despite the difficulties team members recorded some impressive times, especially Roger Leigh who ran in the over 60 category and recorded a time of 1:56:13!
Thank you to all the runners and the support team who made the event so enjoyable and successful.
See you all next year!
