"I was filled with admiration"
Sam Knight, a journalist, visited Tigers Club in December 2007.

"I spent an extremely useful afternoon at the Tigers Club with andrew mcconnell 300pxAndrew McConnell, a photographer, just before Christmas while researching a story for the Financial Times on how countries are coping, and planning to cope, with extremely young populations. Uganda, according to the UN Population Division, is the youngest country on earth, with a median male age of just 15. More than half of the population is under the age of 18. While in Kampala I was really keen to talk to teenage boys about being part of a crowded generation -- whether it was something that they noticed or thought much about. And for two hours in the sunshine, as more than 200 boys queued and joked and occasionally quarrelled over some very large looking lunches, I got my education from the Tigers Club. There was nothing straightforward about what the boys said -- I was confronted by a variety of experiences and characters -- optimists and pessimists -- but there was no doubt about how much they needed the club and, in the case of those who had benefited for a few years from its services and support, how it was changing their lives. I was filled with admiration by the hard work of Simon Basoga and his team and the utterly inclusive spirit of the place. You don't normally feel heartened after talking to young people living precarious lives, but for those two hours, I knew those boys were in safe hands. Thank you for letting us in."
