For children, the reality of life on the street is that each day is a matter of survival. The children we work with lack even the basic necessities: shelter, food, security. Yet the flow of children coming to the streets is increasing. Poverty, drought and trafficking mean more children than ever before are experiencing the destitution of living and working on the streets.

Children have always been, and will continue to be, at the centre of all our work. But in recent years, Retrak has broadened its approach to include more family and community work. Our outreach work and our transition centres provide the safe places that children need. But as a colleague in Ethiopia said, ‘this is a container underneath a pouring tap’. If we are to achieve our vision of a world where no child is forced to live on the street, we must turn off the tap. Stop the flow of children starting the journey to the street at the source.

I am proud that thanks to your support we have successfully reintegrated over 1,000 children back into a loving family and community setting. I am also delighted that this report highlights the impact our work strengthening vulnerable families and communities has had in preventing many more thousands of children ever experiencing the trauma of life on the streets.

Thank you for the contribution you have made, as valuable Retrak supporters, to Retrak’s success in 2016. To read the 2016-2017 annual report, please click here.
