At the heart of RETRAK is passion. Passion to see street children’s lives dramatically changed. Passion to see those who the World rejects become valued members of society. Passion to see children growing up in secure, loving, caring families and, in turn, to offer love and care to others. Passion to see children develop to their full potential emotionally, psychologically and spiritually.
Why? Because we believe that every individual is of equal and immeasurable worth - created equal by God. We believe it is shocking that millions of children in the 21st Century are treated worse than animals.
Our Core Values
1.Every child is a unique & valuable gift to be loved & cared for as an individual - childhood is not just being prepared for adulthood.
2.Safe family is the preferred environment for the child to grow and develop.
3.The community has a vital role to play in the protection and development of the life of its children.
4.Our ethos is motivated by our Christian faith through which we embrace peoples of all tribes, creeds & cultures.
Street children are on a prolonged, tough and irregular journey of restoration and as such our paradigm for supporting them must reflect that. Our aspiration is to measure our effectiveness by the impact street children have on themselves and their communities through accessing Retrak’s provision.
Retrak shall engage with society to see that street children are defined as human beings in need of the same care, love and support as all of humanity. Therefore, in order to achieve that we will: -
1. Make a long term commitment to support street children, which is not bound by a formula of activities, rather it is a promise to help them to make progress, wherever they are, at their pace and ability in the way that they need.
2. Tailor our programmes so that each street child is recognised as an individual, with unique needs, so that we are not purely results orientated and driven. Their destination will be influenced by their starting point: not determined by ours.
3. Equip and empower street children with the skills and emotional literacy so they know they have choices, and are able to make positive contributions to their own lives and their community.
4. Reach out to street children, particularly those most at risk, so that no one is forgotten or without hope.
5. Excel in the provision and delivery of services for street children and follow an exemplary approach to safeguarding them.
6. Change the landscape and attitude in the public domain so that street children are no longer exploited, viewed as a commodity, or treated as despised objects.
What we do
RETRAK aims to establish locally relevant models in the care of street and former street children, to build the capacity of local organisations working with street children and to raise awareness of the issues faced by street children and to speak out on their behalf.
RETRAK has for a long time now had a vision to extend the impact of The Tigers Club beyond Uganda and to using the experience and lessons learned in Kampala to reach out to children in other cities. Since 2005, RETRAK has developed a partnership with The Caleb Project in Eldoret, Kenya and has opened a new project in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and is exploring possibilities of extending the work to other parts of East Africa.
Retrak has been offered an exciting challenge from Global Giving USA this November. During November, donations of up
to $500 which are sent to Retrak via Global Giving will be matched by Global Giving on a sliding scale at a rate up 50%.
This means donations given during this period will go even further to help us transform the lives of street children in Africa.
To maximise the potential income from this challenge, we urgently need all of our supporters in the USA to donate to Retrak
through Global Giving, before 1st December. There are two ways you can donate:
- Online at http://www.globalgiving.com/projects/support-street-children-in-africa/ - by credit card or paypal
- By cheque, made out to ‘The Global Giving Foundation’ to:
The GlobalGiving Foundation, 1023 15th Street NW, 12th Floor, Washington, DC 20005
If you choose to send a cheque, please make sure to include a note stating that the money should go to Retrak.
We have set an ambitious target of raising $7,500 in donations during November so that the money is
matched at the highest rate. This would mean that the total money received will add up to a fantastic
$11,250 – which is enough to pay for:
- The medical centre in Uganda to run for one year
- 35 boys to complete the education they have missed
- Salaries of 3 teachers/social workers for one year
So please visit http://www.globalgiving.com/projects/support-street-children-in-africa/ and donate
any amount you can afford to help Retrak achieve this target.
If you don’t live in the USA, please forward this to your friends, family and colleagues who may know people willing to help.
Thank you!
